I’m sure you’ve had a fair share of run-ins with ‘booktok’ and ‘bookstagram’. Reading’s almost become a trend now, contrary to how it seemed earlier.
We see almost every ‘aesthetic pinterest girl’ have a reading list and cute bookmarks. It all seems appealing, especially to your average bookworm, but what about those who’ve never spent a minute of their leisure time reading?
With so many options and so many ‘trending’ novels, it can be easy to feel lost- which is why I've written your ultimate guide to reading in this blog!
Firstly, it’s important to understand reading isn’t a chore, it’s supposed to be something you enjoy- which is also why you shouldn’t go off of trending novels your favorite youtuber recommends- for all you know, it may not be to your taste at all.
Reading is a great way to spend your spare minutes- much better than scrolling through reels, for sure- and it’s a sure-shot way to improve your English and writing skills while simultaneously learning new things about the world and improving your vocabulary. I’m convinced that there’s a book for everyone, and here’s how to find the one for you.
So… how do you figure out what your taste even is? And how do you categorize the several thousands of books available into easily digestible ones for new readers?
This is how!
First, determine what you like and you don’t like. It’s pretty simple! If you like rom-coms, there’s romance books for you. If you like horror, there’s books in that genre too! Murder mystery? You got it.
By being clear with your preferences, the chances of you actually enjoying a book that you pick are much higher.
And… now. A reader’s least favorite task - picking a new book to start.
Here’s a list of easy to comprehend books which, I can assure, you’ll enjoy!
RomcomsAs for romcom books, one of the things you could do to really ease yourself into reading is reading a book that you’ve watched a movie based off of. For example, The Fault in our Stars, The Hating Game, or even our favorite classic - The Notebook.
Other than those, there’s also some more romcom novels that are easy to read and super entertaining:
The Love Hypothesis - Ali Hazelwood
Beach Read - Emily Henry
Red, White and Royal Blue - Casey McQuiston
(P.S - If you love 13 going on 30, It’s a no brainer - you have to read ‘The Good Part’ by Sophie Cousens. Trust me!)
Horror
For horror, there’s also movies that have been adapted from books, for example, The Shining and It.
There’s also The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, and my personal favorite - Coraline.
Mystery
When it comes to mystery, I’d recommend The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes with my whole heart. Captivating, unputdownable, and of course, comprehensible and easy to read- this will for sure leave you wanting more.
You also have One Of Us Is Lying - Karen M McManus, and I’d be committing a crime if I didn’t mention Agatha Christie’s novels - And Then There Were None, Murder on the Orient Express, etc.
Fantasy
Some of my fantasy favorites are the The Folk of The Air series, The Shadow and Bone trilogy, Six of Crows, and the Shatter Me series. These, for sure will leave you enthralled and in awe, and will for sure pique your interest in reading further!
Self - Help
If you’re into self improvement and are constantly looking to better yourself, self help books are the way to go for you.
With several options such as:
Atomic Habits by James Clear - a social media favorite which delves into habit stacking and discipline building.
How to Win Friends and Influence People, talking about social mannerisms and behaviors to improve your social life.
There’s definitely something out there for you that’s going to give you valuable information.
Some more renowned self help books are:
The Power of Habit
The Mountain is You
The Alchemist
So, what are you waiting for? The world of books is vast and has something to offer for everyone. Whether you're a seasoned bookworm or a newbie just starting out, there's a book out there waiting to captivate you. Remember, reading is a journey, not a race. Take your time, explore different genres, and most importantly, enjoy the process.
Happy reading :)
